Hi,

In this Wiki, I will configure Software Distribution to deploy Adobe Reader 7.7

I have created folder (sms_Packages) in the C:\ to copy the file software I want to deploy

[Asem Alhourani: Just a general practice, try to locate the packages source in a folder that's not on the drive C, I know you are in a lab environment iin here, but I just wanted to highlight it]
We need to do 4 steps to complete the configuration:

1. Creating a package
2. Creating a program
3. Advertising the package
4. Distributing the advertisement

1- Creating a Package:

Go to Site Database > Computer Management > Software Distribution > Packages

Right click on packages and choose New package

in the general package properties information

Data Source, click This package contains source files and click on Set to specify the source of the package

Source directory location, click Local drive on site server and browse to the path of Adobe package and click ok

[Asem Alhourani] I prefer creating a Shared folder, and point to the package source using a UNC path. However what you have done is correct.

Set the schedule to update the distribution points and click next

Data Access I will leave them as default and click next

Distribution settings I will leave them as default and click next

Reporting I will leave MIF properties as default and click next

Security rights for the package and click next

Summary of choices I have made and click next

Install the package; then a confirmation that it is installed

2- Create a Program for the Package

Expand the newly added Adobe Reader package and right click on New > Program

Program details Name of program and click on browse to the path of AdbeRdr.exe and click ok

Browse to the path of AdbeRdr.exe and click ok

Then click next

[Asem Alhourani] One Important thing to be added is the command line parameters of the *.exe file. I mean you can for instance run adobe.exe /? so that you know the command line parameters associated with this program name, this will help a lot in the deployment phase of the package.

Requirements, I will choose All X86 Windows XP for the program requirements and click next

Environment, change the Program can run (Program can run whether or not the user is logged on) and click next

Advanced settings as default

Windows Installer we don't need product code I will leave default and click next

MOM Maintenance we do not have MOM click next

Summary review and click next

Click Close to finish

3- Advertise the Package

Now I need to advertise the program that I want the clients to run. Advertising the program makes a program available to a specified collection of clients.

Go to System Center Configuration Manager > Site Database > Computer Management > Software Distribution > Advertisements, right click on Advertisements and click New Advertisement.

General type the advertisement Name Adobe Reader

Package click on the browse to select the package, click Ok, and select the Program

Collection click on the browse to select the collection you want to deploy the software and click Ok

click next

When you click next message prompted about distribution points, click yes (we will update the distribution point later)

Advertisement schedule click on the yellow star to set mandatory settings to As soon as possible and click Ok and click next

Distribution point settings on a fast and slow LAN and click next

Interaction by setting the time interval to 15 minutes and click next

[Asem Alhourani] Well, in here you are telling ConfigMgr to keep counting down starting from 15 minutes before the software runs.

Class Security rights as default and click next

Advertisement summary, click next

Confirmation Click close to finish

4- Create and Update Distribution point

Distribution Points right click on it, click New Distribution Point

Welcome to New Distribution Points wizard appears click next

Select your ConfigMgr Server from the list and click next

Summary and click close

Now we need to update the distribution point we have just created with our advertisement package so right click on distribution points and click Update Distribution Points

Confirm Update Distribution Points click Yes

We have completed the 4 steps to configure Software Distribution

1. Created a Package

2. Created a Program

3. Advertising the Package

4. Distributing the Advertisement

[Asem Alhourani] Mazen you should have created and updated the DP before advertising the package.

We need to go to the client PC.

Go to Control Panel and duple click on Configuration Manger icon click on Actions tab we want to initiate the User Policy Retrieval & Evaluation Cycle and the Machine Policy Retrieval & Evaluation Cycle to speed up distribution of the Advertisements

In the console, we can check the package status

We are done .... Pls. Advice...[:|]
